This is based on a research to find out what are the contributing factors in forming of Gujarati society, which witnessed communal violence in 2002. It incorporates analysis of attitudinal survey, interviews of eminent Gujaratis and press clippings to reveal whether social engineering had taken place or not and if so, how and what was the content. The survey covered entire Gujarat with 2,958 respondents. The survey analysis focuses on five aspects: how 2002 riots are different than the previous ones in Gujarat; causes and strategies for spread of communalism; attitude of Gujaratis toward communalism; strategies employed by Sangh Parivar for strengthening ‘Hindutva’; and what could be done to promote secularism in Gujarat. |

The study focuses on eastern Gujarat, dominated with tribal population in Gujarat. This belt has witnessed the highest industrial development and dams on the large rivers due to which the tribals lost their land on a large scale. Despite protection mechanism under land revenue code, tribal land continues to be sold away to non-tribals. Though officially land alienation among tribals is 7%, unofficially it touched almost 14%, as middle and upper middle, educated tribals have bought tribals land and quarrying and mining has left irreversible land use of tribals. This study was assigned by Ministry of Rural development as part of series of study every decade on the issue. |

This is a seminal work on violence on women in Gujarat. It analyses 1200 newspaper clipping collected over the year 1988. It focuses on types of violence and narrows down to show extent of unnatural deaths, i.e. every day 3 women were dying unnaturally (‘agnisnan’ as said in Gujarat) and the region specific pattern of violence on women, e.g. witch-branding in tribal areas, highest suicide rates in western Gujarat and historical tradition of ‘dudh piti’ in northern Gujarat. It examines policy, legal provisions and social processes to deal with unnatural deaths of women. The second edition of the book is published by Department of Women & Child Development to be used by all the government and police officials dealing with violence on women. |
